A number of factors contribute together in making a house look pleasant and beautiful. Windows and doors are some of the most important of such parts of the home. Windows are not only a source of air and light, but they also lend a touch of uniqueness to any residence. As such, window replacement is an exercise that needs to be performed with due diligence and an eye for details. Hiring the services of an expert window replacement contractor is also of paramount importance.
Window replacement, however, is not something a householder does often; nor is it a very easy exercise. Customers need to make informed decisions while opting for any window replacement project. For this purpose, (s)he needs to have adequate knowledge of the technical aspects of the project, preferably with the help of window replacement contractors.
Before hiring a professional window replacement contractor, a householder needs to keep certain factors related to the project in mind. These factors would help him/her install the best type of window (and/or, door), that would also fit perfectly with the overall home décor. Some such preliminary recommendations for window or door installation are:
a)In double-paned windows, gases are used to improve their insulation properties. Argon and Krypton are the two gases that are used for this purpose. One has to be sure about whether (s)he needs gas in his/her windows,
b)Reflective glass coatings should be opted for. These coatings are the most useful in reflecting away the direct sunlight (and, the radiant heat it generates),
c)Energy efficiency measures should be given due consideration. Generally, a R-4 rating (i.e., a U-value of 0.25) is deemed desirable,
d)Before installing a new window and/or door, air-sealing facilities (around the frame of the window or door) should be checked for,
e)Windows are extremely important in maintaining the overall temperature of a house, accounting for 40-50% of the total heat gained or lost. As such, their reflective properties should be given due importance,
f)In general, window replacement contractors apply low-E coatings to the glass (at the end of the float process). In these cases, a soft coating should be opted for. Hard coats do not form a desirable combination with low-E applications,
g)Aluminum windows, due to their properties as conductors, are not ideal to be used in homes (although, they can be opted for in large, commercial projects).
Although windows and doors form, on an average, about 10-15% of an entire house, their proper installation is crucial to the overall beautification of the home, and the comfort it offers. If one keeps the above general recommendations in mind, and hires an expert window replacement contractor, the project should be a success. A successful window or door installation/replacement project would surely go a long way in enhancing the style and comfort levels of any house.
